Enhancing visitor experience of traditional pastry "Pazinski cukerančić"

About the pilot action

The pilot action aimed to preserve and promote the intangible cultural heritage of Central Istria through the story of Pazinski cukerančić, a traditional wedding pastry, while testing visitor-centered production shows as an innovative approach to cultural presentation. By combining digital tools and interactive performance, the action sought to enhance visitor engagement and strengthen local identity linked to traditional crafts and customs.

The pilot action focused on testing visitor-centered production shows as a creative way to interpret cultural heritage. It highlighted the cultural value of Pazinski cukerančić, a pastry listed as Croatia’s Protected Intangible Cultural Heritage. Two main activities were implemented. The first was the establishment of an informative point within Pazin Castle, featuring a digital screen that allows visitors to explore the recipe, watch testimonies of local craftwomen, and virtually experience the preparation of the pastry. The second was the interactive performance/play “Zabranjeni cukerančić”, premiered on September 4th in Pazin Castle, which revived the scents, colors, and customs of a traditional Istrian wedding. The performance combined education and entertainment, engaging audience in a participatory experience that celebrated this living tradition, while promoting innovative ways of heritage interpretation.

The pilot resulted in two key outcomes: an informative digital point about Pazinski cukerančić in Pazin Castle and the interactive performance/play “Zabranjeni cukerančić”. Together, they served as a successful test of visitor-centered production shows, enriching the cultural offer, improving audience interaction, and supporting the sustainable safeguarding and promotion of the area’s intangible heritage and a meaningful traditional craft.
